Laboratory and Organizational Transformation, Processes, and Systems
A second research focus addresses the digital and sustainable transformation of laboratories, research infrastructures, and institutions.
Examples include our work on sustainable laboratory practices (BWGreenLabs) and the analysis of higher education as a real-world laboratory for transformation (see e.g. Terpstra-Rundel & Möller, 2025).
Our work explores:
digital transformation of wet laboratories
automation and digital process integration
data-driven quality assurance (QA) and GxP optimization
resilience and complex systems analysis
sustainable laboratory practices and resource efficiency
The aim is to improve safety, transparency, and efficiency in research and production environments while investigating institutional and societal transformation processes in a broader context.
In addition to research and analytical work, we also develop and facilitate interactive workshop formats that support reflection, learning, teambuilding, and transformation processes in organizations. These include formats such as Climate Fresk and workshops using the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® methods and materials, which help participants explore complex sustainability, strategy development, and transformation challenges in a structured and collaborative way.
